Update to Queensland Training Requirements
Legislation Changes: Effective 1st of April 2025
Key Information
Over the past few days, you may have received an email regarding the Child protection training requirements - Queensland Government protocol that will take effect from 1 April 2025.
With this email has come a lot of confusion and misinformation about what these changes will look like. Our training organisation alone has taken over 50 enquiries in this short period of time. To help you understand these requirements we have created the below Q & A and provided relevant information.
As of 1 April 2025, the approved provider of an education and care service must ensure that nominated supervisors, persons in day-to-day charge and family day care coordinators have completed ONE of the below courses under Section 162A of the Education and Care Services National Law.
- CHCPRT025 - Identify and report children and young people at risk
- CHCPRT001 - Identify and respond to children and young people at risk
- CHCPRT026 - Support the rights and safety of children and young people
- CHCPRT002 - Support the rights and safety of children and young people
- CHCECE057 - Use collaborative practices to uphold child protection principles
MOST people in these roles will have already done one of these courses in their Certificate III or Diploma of Early Childhood & Education as it is a CORE subject. If you have done it, then YOU DO NOT NEED to do it again. It is a once off requirement.
If you HAVE NOT done it, then you will need to do one of these subjects through an approved RTO. In Safe Hands has partnered with an RTO to provide these courses. There will be more information in our newsletters and social media within the next few weeks about how you can access these courses.
Only the bolded people above are required to do this course (nominated supervisors, persons in day-to-day charge and family day care coordinators) - not every EDUCATOR.
For the remainder of your Educators at your service, they are required Under Regulation 84 of the Education and Care Service National Regulations to have Awareness of child protection obligations. This awareness is required by the following persons:
- a nominated supervisor of the service;
- a staff member of the service;
- a volunteer at the service;
- a student who participates in the service.
This training can be provided by ANY training organisation and DOES NOT have to be an RTO. This is the training that In Safe Hands currently provides.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
Q: Is in-house training acceptable under the new protocol?
A: No, in-house training does not meet the requirements. Training must be provided by an RTO to comply with Section 162A and ANY training organisation for other Educators under Regulation 84.
Q: If I have already completed one of the approved courses during my Certificate III or Diploma of Early Childhood & Education, do I need to do the course again?
A: No, if you have already completed one of the approved courses, it satisfies the requirements. You will still be required to do training on a regular basis (12-18 months) to satisfy the requirements of Regulation 84.
Q: What evidence do I need to provide to demonstrate compliance with the protocol?
A: You will need to provide a certificate of completion or a transcript showing successful completion of one of the approved courses. This can be achieved by accessing your course using your USI or having a look on the website for the course you completed and the core subjects. Example: CHC50113 Diploma of Early Childhood Education and Care.
Q: Once I have done this training, I am no longer required to do any Child Protection training ever again?
A: No this is not correct. You will always be required to undergo Child Protection refresher training under Regulation 84. This is to be done by every person working in this sector every 12-18 months.
Q: Because In Safe Hands is not an RTO, does that mean we can’t do our Child Protection training with you?
A: No. In Safe Hands have partnered with an RTO to deliver the training required under Section 162A. In Safe Hands has always been an approved provider to provide Child Protection training and refresher training under Regulation 84 - so nothing needs to change.
Q: I did my Diploma over 10 years ago and it does not contain any of the core units mentioned. Does this mean I have to redo my whole Diploma?
A: No, you just have to do one unit not a whole Diploma.
Q: I run a Family Day Care Scheme. Do all my Educators have to do one on the course coded units?
A: No – only Family Day Care coordinators are required to complete one of the units.
