Nutrition Australia has Significantly Updated its Offerings
Safe Food Handling
Safe Food Handling is essential to protect young children from foodborne illnesses and allergic reactions. Proper handling, storage, and preparation of food help prevent contamination and ensure meals are safe for consumption. Key aspects include maintaining safe temperatures to avoid the danger zone (5°C–60°C), handling potentially hazardous foods with care, and following strict hygiene practices such as handwashing and cleaning procedures. Special attention is required for expressed breastmilk, infant formula, and foods that pose a choking risk. Effective allergen management, proper cooking, cooling, reheating, and self-service protocols further minimise risks. Regular monitoring, food recalls, and staff training reinforce a culture of food safety in childcare environments. Level 1 of Safe Food Handling is a more comprehensive overview of these topics, however our Advanced Safe Food Handling course (formerly the Level 2 of Safe Food Handling) builds upon prior learnings and explores them in more detail.
Mealtimes, Food, and Nutrition
Formerly referred to as Nutrition Requirements, this course has been adapted to explore the feeding development of infants and young children (0-5 years) in early childhood settings. Educators play a key role in shaping healthy eating habits through positive mealtime interactions, supportive food language, and structured routines. Understanding developmental feeding stages helps ensure meals are appropriate, safe, and responsive to children's needs. Clear mealtime roles promote independence while maintaining guidance and safety. This course aligns with national guidelines and standards to ensure that meals are nutritious, balanced, and support overall child development.
